DIY Seat Cushion Guide

There’s nothing like setting your sights on a DIY project and learning how to make something for yourself. If the thought of DIY projects scares you though, you’ve probably avoided them altogether because you fear that your craft or handyman skills aren’t up to scratch.

One project that’s incredibly easy to make is a do it yourself cushion. These accessories don’t require any manual labor or even sewing, so they’re the perfect place to start even for people who’ve never attempted a DIY project before.

We’ve found two simple methods for how to make seat cushions at home, and they require very little in the way of materials and know-how. A seat cushion is a versatile and practical accessory that would make a great gift for others or yourself, so if you’ve been thinking of adding some to your collection then this is the place to do it.

Why Make A DIY Seat Cushion?

Needle In Hands

Making a seat cushion is a pretty easy project to do at home, but what are the benefits that it offers? Here are some reasons why you might want to make your own cushion either for yourself or someone else.

  • Misplaced regular seat cushion: If you own a dedicated car seat cushion and can’t find it, you can easily make one of these while you wait for a new one to arrive
  • Home décor: Cushions can be incredibly expensive to purchase new so being able to make your own saves a lot of money. You can also have more freedom with the material and style used so it suits your home
  • Having a spare: If you know you can’t live without your seat cushion, just knowing that you have a backup lying around can give great peace of mind
  • Adding comfort to the home: Adding a cushion to any seat of the house will improve its comfort levels. You can add these cushions to bay windows, sofas, dining chairs, or anywhere else you regularly sit
  • A gift for a friend: A handmade gift like a DIY seat cushion is the perfect gift for a friend or family member
  • Saving money: The materials needed to make these cushions usually cost less than buying one brand new so it’s perfect for thrifty savers

No Sew Window Seat Cushion

DIY Seat Cushion For Window

A window seat cushion is a fun and stylish way to add some comfort to your home, and it makes a practical new place to sit as well. If you often avoid craft projects or DIY because you don’t know how to sew, you’ll be thrilled to learn that this one doesn’t require any of those skills at all. To create your own do it yourself cushion for the window, you’ll need:

  • Spray adhesive;
  • Staple gun and ¼” staples;
  • Roll of poly foam cut to plywood;
  • A sheet of plywood to suit your window size;
  • Fabric for cover;

Method

  • Measure up your window and where the seat will go underneath it. Order some plywood and have it cut to size, or perform the cut at home if you’re able to
  • Spray one side of the cut plywood with the adhesive and carefully lay the foam down on top. If there’s any excess coming off the edge, trim it with scissors or a knife
  • Place the fabric down on the ground somewhere flat and put the foam and plywood right in the center with the foam facing down
  • Pull one side of the fabric over the middle and hold it tight while you staple it down. Repeat for the other side so they are both secured and the fabric is taught. Staple along the fold where they meet
  • Fold up the bottom edges as you would do when wrapping a gift, and then staple them down as well
  • Turn the seat cushion around and check that everything is in place, then give it 24 hours to dry before using

Car Seat Cushion

When you’re in a bind and don’t have your dedicated car seat cushion ready to go, you can reach for this handmade one instead. Using a premade cushion cover that you have at home saves money and lets you recycle an old item. This cushion is super easy to make at home and is a good backup for your regular car seat cushion. You’ll need:

  • Foam cut to size;
  • Fiberfill wrap;
  • Scissors;
  • Staple gun;
  • Cushion cover;

Method

  • Figure out the measurements of your chosen cushion cover and then select some heavy-duty foam or memory foam for the filling. You can have this cut to the size you need a professional to do so or you can perform the cut at home using a craft knife
  • If using two pieces of foam, stick them together with adhesive spray and leave them to set
  • Wrap the fiberfill around the entirety of the foam so it’s completely covered and then staple on one side to secure
  • Stuff the foam and fiberfill into your chosen cushion cover and zip up

Support Where It Counts

We put a lot of pressure and strain on our backs during the day and having a cushion to sit on is the simplest relief. There might be times when you don’t have your dedicated seat cushion on hand, and having the know-how to make your own can save you a lot of money.

These DIY projects are intended as a bit of fun and a way to build something for yourself but they should never replace a professional product. For those with back problems or discomfort sitting on regular seats, the best solution is a car or office seat cushion that’s been ergonomically designed to help with these issues.
